HISTORY of OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
The university can trace its history back as far as 1865 with the foundation of the Oxford School of Art. Over the years the school merged and grew until 1992, when it became Oxford Brookes University. It was named after John Henry Brookes, first Principal of the Schools of Technology, Art and Commerce.
STUDENT SUPPORT AT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
The university caters to each student’s needs with support services ranging from study advice, careers, IT support, Students’ Union advice, disability services, multifaith chaplaincy, counselling and research training. There are specialist support services for international students including the International Student Advice Team to help students with issues such as visas, employment and finance before arrival and at any issues throughout their time at the university. The Careers Service offers mock interviews and CV workshops, and they continue to support our students up to three years after they graduate. The Centre for Academic Development is a confidential study service that can provide 1:1 tutorials on study skills, writing your dissertation, and more.
The Medical Centre on Headington Campus is staffed by doctors and nurses who offer a confidential and comprehensive medical service. There is also a dental practice and osteopathy clinic.

OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY FACILITIES
Oxford Brookes University invested approximately £220 million in their campus between 2015 and 2025.
In January 2025, teaching commenced in the brand-new engineering teaching and workshop buildings featuring state-of-the art facilities and equipment including digital, computing and robotics labs, a digital theatre, VR cave and material science labs, composite lab, and an autodynamics workshop. Students have the opportunity to work with a variety of engines, dynamics fluid, mechanical testing, and stress testing. Additionally, the facility offers a four-post rig for chassis analysis.
SPORTS AND SOCIETIES AT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
Oxford Brookes is renowned for its sport and if you want to get involved there is plenty of choice and facilities to match:

Run by students for students, the Students' Union is central to Oxford Brookes life. It is home to around 100 diverse clubs and societies, including various international ones, which are a great way for you to meet new people and discover new hobbies and interests.
One of the university’s most popular extra-curricular activities is Brookes Racing. There are over 300 members, with 28 different nationalities! This is a great opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience on the UK’s no.1 Formula Student team, Oxford Brookes Racing (OBR). Formula Student is run by the Institute for Mechanical Engineers, and is an annual student engineering competition held at Silverstone in the UK. Student teams from around the world design, build, test and race their small-scale, formula style racing car.
Oxford Brookes Racing (OBR) was founded in 1999 to compete in Formula Student. They have developed and grown into one of Europe’s elite Formula Student teams. They have collected seven UK Top Team awards along the way; more than any other university. In 2025 the team came 3rd overall, 1st in the UK. OBR nurture and help develop high-quality talent, regardless of what you’re studying or which year you’re in. Any students, not just Engineering, can join the team!
ACCOMMODATION AT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
The university provides excellent accommodation services for international students.
Accommodation options include single study bedrooms in halls of residence, most of which are ensuite. These provide students with a safe and secure living environment and are a great way to meet new friends. International students starting in September are guaranteed a place in halls in their first year, provided they meet the application deadlines.

Oxford Brookes is located in Oxford, a great place to be a student. It is a world-famous and historic city, renowned for its architecture, museums, rowing, punting, and scenic riverside walks. The city is also bursting with restaurants, cafés, theatres, cinemas and shops, and has its own covered market that was established in 1774. More than ¼ of all the adults who live in Oxford are full-time students. This is more than any other city in England. The city has a vibrant, youthful, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. All this is only 60 miles from London, less than one hour away by train.
