STUDY Forensic science IN THE UK
A degree in Forensic Science is ideal for those interested in the collection and interpretation of scientific data. In a typical criminal investigation, crime scene investigators collect evidence from the crime scene and forensic scientists examine it to assist the investigation and court process. The coroner therefore works closely with the police.
Forensic science is an interdisciplinary field, involving chemistry and biology in particular, but also subjects such as physics, geology and psychology. The programme is not only about developing skills for forensic investigations, but also about communicating findings to people outside the field. Forensic science is a rigorous scientific discipline and with such a degree you will be a good candidate for employers in, for example, a forensic laboratory, but you will also have many opportunities in a wider range of areas outside the field itself.
STUDY
Examples include the use of gas chromatography to identify seized drugs and unknown substances, DNA profiling to identify a murder suspect from a blood stain found at a crime scene, or the use of Raman spectroscopy to identify microscopic paint fragments.
The programme covers the key elements of modern forensic science, including the biological and chemical aspects of the discipline and their application to crime scene investigation. It also covers topics such as physiology and laboratory techniques. In the second and third years, you can often focus on a particular direction through self-selected modules. The programme can also be combined with chemistry, criminology, psychology, information technology and computer security.

Master’s degree
What's so amazing about the UK is that you can apply for almost any master's degree without necessarily having a bachelor's degree in the same field. Of course, a relevant bachelor's degree will be beneficial, but it is not always a requirement. In the UK, you can take a master's degree in one year!
