NURSING STUDIES IN THE UK
Are you considering studying nursing abroad? Why not study nursing in the UK? The nursing programme covers areas of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, drug calculation, pathology, psychology, ethics, health policy and legislation. This is an education for those who love people, enjoy daily challenges and who work well in a team.
The nursing education is very varied and includes both theory and practice. The education is about learning to provide good and caring care to people who are exposed to illness, suffering or injury, as well as to people who are in the last phase of life. As a nurse, you have many varied job opportunities, such as in somatic hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatry, child welfare services, etc.
When you study nursing in the UK, you can choose to specialise as a special type of nurse within your bachelor's degree. It’s a good idea to think about what area you wish to work in before deciding the direction you want to go, as it can be difficult to go from one direction to another once you graduate. There will be several options for choosing specializations later in your degree in terms of which field you want to proceed with.
THE NURSING PROGRAM
The first year of the nursing programme consists of basic theory, while the second and third years are arranged for students to learn theory at the university and have practical learning through internships at nursing homes close to the university. Electives enable you to study areas of the subject that interest you most.
Throughout the programme, you can benefit from varied learning methods such as internships, exchanges, and internships/work placements. The programme is a mix of theoretical and practical work, which gives you a broad basic knowledge necessary to succeed in professional life. The universities also have good cooperation agreements with universities in other countries, where you can go on exchange for up to one year.
MASTER'S DEGREE WITH EDUCATION AS A NURSE
In the UK, you do not need to take a master's degree the same subject as you have taken a bachelor's degree in. If you have a relevant background in nursing or health sciences, you can continue with studies in fields such as health/nutrition, psychology, midwifery, medicine, biomedicine, radiography, genetics, chiropractic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and much more.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES AS A NURSE
You have many opportunities for specialisation and further education as a trained nurse, such as cancer nursing, anaesthetic nursing, psychiatric nursing, intensive care nursing, neuro-nursing, theatre nursing or paediatric nursing. Public health nursing and midwifery programmes are also further education programmes for nurses.
When you work as a nurse, you must also be prepared for the fact that many of the job opportunities that exist are internships. This means that if you want to work as a nurse in, for example, a hospital, you should be prepared for the fact that this is not necessarily an 8-4 job. There are also job opportunities for those who do not want internships, but there are fewer of these, e.g. work at a health clinic or similar.
REGISTRATION IN CANADA
The UK nursing qualification that is generally transferable in most countries is the 'Registered Nurse: Adult' degree. However, applicants will need to check with any relevant nurses' association for information on the minimum requirements and regulatory framework in the province or country where they intend to work. They may be asked to undertake further courses, or professional exams to meet the requirements for registration in Canada.
