French Studies in the UK
Around 122 million people speak French as their mother tongue, with almost 8 million Canadians using French as their primary language. French is also the working language of a number of international organizations. Studying French will increase your ability to understand and use modern French in writing and speaking which will increase your chances of communicating in non-English speaking countries, and is the international language of fashion, performing arts, visual arts, dance, architecture and food. France is also one of the most high-profile producers of international films. French is an official language of the UN, EU, UNESCO, NATO, the International Red Cross, and international courts.
French studies are available at both undergraduate (bachelor's) and postgraduate (master's and PhD) level.
Your studies will involve speaking and writing in the French language. You will also get to know French literature and how people live and think in France. Through both a theoretical and practical approach, you will develop good skills in the use of modern French.
Some universities will offer the option of studying French combined with modern languages for four years, where you can spend the third year of your degree in France. It may also be possible to choose between spending the year at a partner university in France or working.
Study Abroad as part of your degree:
Some universities offer a one-year exchange, where you have the option of taking your second year in France, or possibly in another French-speaking country. Your Across the Pond advisor can work with you to determine which degree/university aligns most with your academic goals.
Similar studies and combinations
If you don’t want to complete your entire degree in French, many universities also offer the opportunity to combine French with other studies such as English/literature, film, business, finance, history, politics, psychology, sociology, social economy, marketing, art history or with other languages.

Master’s Degree in 1 Year
Many UK universities offer master's degrees that can be completed in one year. In addition to this, you can apply to almost any master's degree without necessarily having a bachelor's degree in the same field. Of course, a relevant bachelor's degree would be advantageous, but it is not always a requirement.
*Do note that some French degrees do require an interview as part of the application process to assess your fluency in the language.
Job Opportunities
Language skills are important in today’s job market, and with French being one of Canada’s official languages, having a thorough understanding of the language will make you more employable and open job opportunities across the country within areas of media, service, government/politics, translation and more.
With a bachelor's degree in French, you will be able to work with translation, as an interpreter, or you can specialize in translating and putting together subtitles for films and TV series. Other examples are working as a teacher, administrator, journalist or in tourism.
