Study Automotive Engineering or Motorsport Engineering in the UK
North Americans have become increasingly more aware of the career opportunities within formula racing and other motorsports. While Canada has its own contribution to the F1 scene with its annual race at Canadian Grand Prix track in Montreal QC, students wishing to pursue a future in F1 or related careers, may not know where to start. Across the Pond can help!
There are plenty of opportunities in the UK that can help develop foundational knowledge to start a career in this area. As an automotive or motorsport engineering student you will learn how to design, test, and develop vehicles and their components from theoretical concept to production. You will also study a wide range of subject areas within mechanical engineering to ensure a rounded foundation. In later years of study (and in master's level studies) you will focus your studies specifically on the automotive industry.
Final year and master's level students will often have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field through placements or volunteer positions with national or international companies.
Types of Degrees
Generally, a ‘Motorsport Engineering’ or ‘Mechanical Engineering’ degree would be a good starting point if students are interested in pursuing a career within F1, but there are plenty of other options in areas such as ‘General Engineering’, ‘Automotive Engineering’ or even ‘Materials Engineering’ to help get your career on the right track.
These programmes can often come with fantastic networking opportunities or even work placement options as part of the degree.

Job Opportunities
This is an exciting and dynamic industry and as a recent graduate you may seek employment in a car manufacturing company managing the design and development of next-generation cars or in the motorsport sector. One is often involved in research, process design and production.
If you plan to return to work in Canada following your degree, you should review the licensing requirements for working as a professional engineer in your preferred province.
