STUDY HUMAN RIGHTS STUDIES IN THE UK
A Human Rights degree offers you the opportunity to study one of the most important practical and theoretical problems of our time. The protection of human rights is a broad field of study in which legal, social, political and philosophical issues are central. The Human Rights programme reflects all these issues through an interdisciplinary approach. Through the study of human rights, you will learn about the extent to which human rights form the basis of national and international law, the challenges and demands posed by refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants fleeing conflict in search of a better life, how conflicts have led to significant human rights violations, and more.
Several of our partners also offer work experience or exchanges to another country included in the programme. Here you can gain professional experience by working in a company or organization and learning what it means to work within the human rights field. These can lead to other exciting opportunities for work experience, internships and, job opportunities later in your career.
This degree is usually combined with other subjects, but some universities offer a specific human rights degree. You could, for example, combine your studies with languages, psychology, philosophy, politics, history, journalism, sociology and law. What you choose could be the springboard for your future career! To find out what combinations are available, contact one of our advisors.
MASTER'S DEGREE IN ONE YEAR
There aren't many universities in the UK that offer human rights at undergraduate level, but there are some. At master's level, however, there are many more options, and students apply to master's programmes with many different bachelor's degrees. What's amazing about the UK is that you can apply for almost any master's programme without necessarily having a bachelor's degree in the same subject area. Of course, a relevant undergraduate degree is an advantage, but it is not always a requirement. In the UK, you can also complete a master's degree in one year, compared to two years in Canada. We at Across the Pond will be happy to send you suggestions for courses that suit you.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
There are many opportunities available after studying human rights. For example, you can seek further education and combine the programme with other disciplines such as journalism, politics, sociology and the like, or you can go straight into work and begin developing your career. Many find careers within the UN, in humanitarian or political NGOs as journalists or policy analysts, in trade unions or in research.
