 HISTORY OF CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

City was founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute, and became a university when The City University was created by royal charter in 1966. The Inns of Court School of Law, which merged with City in 2001, was established in 1852, making it the university's oldest constituent part. In September 2016, the University became a member institution of the federal University of London, becoming part of the eighteen colleges and ten research institutes that then made up that university. 
 

SPECIALIST AREAS AT CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

City is composed of six academic Schools offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses: Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), The City Law School, the School of Communication and Creativity, the School of Policy and Global Affairs, the School of Science and Technology, and the School of Health and Psychological Sciences. 

Courses cover the following academic areas: Business, Arts, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Sciences and Law. Each of City’s academic Schools has a particular strength, for example the School of Health & Psychological Sciences is leading research in ophthalmology. 
 

LIFE ON CAMPUS 

City is right at the heart of it all in Islington, a bohemian area of London known for its many independent shops, bars and restaurants. At the doorsteps of the historic City of London and Tech City – Europe's largest cluster of digital startups, City students are never far from the exciting experiences and enriching opportunities that London has to offer.  

City’s main campus is just a short tube or bus ride into central London, with its diverse range of theatres, world leading galleries and museums and famous attractions. If all that hustle and bustle gets a little too much, London is home to over 3,000 parks and open areas for you to relax in. Or you can hop on a train and visit any number of the UK’s fantastic cities and towns. 

STUDENT SUPPORT AT CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

It’s not just students’ academic development that’s important to City. City offers a wide range of services to support students from day one, to help them settle in and cope with the pressures that come with student life, including: 

  • Student counselling and mental health teams: confidential mental health support, workshops and self-help material. Free counselling is also offered, including a daily drop-in service 
  • Wellbeing services: a health service, where you can get advice from a registered nurse and get immunisation jabs; a disability service for those with physical and mental disabilities; and a chaplaincy service, with support and spaces to pray and reflect. 
  • Dedicated support for care leavers and estranged students; offering advice and support on a range of financial and personal issues. 
     

CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON FACILITIES 

City believes that to produce world-leading research, students need world-class equipment and facilities. City has invested £150 million in responsive learning environments, new technologies, library and study spaces and its staff over the past ten years. The facilities have been designed, often in collaboration with professionals working in relevant sectors, to ensure that students have opportunities to develop professional skills and prepare for their future careers. 

Library facilities 
The resources and facilities provided by Library Services are integral to the student experience and academic journey at City. The main Northampton Square Library occupies five floors in the University Building and there are specialist libraries for Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) and The City Law School.  

City’s dynamic library collections are shaped by student demand. Subject librarians are dedicated to supporting students throughout their course by directing them towards the resources to complete their assignments and prepare for examinations. Specialist support is available through enquiry points, online chat service, one-to-one tutorials and workshops to help students locate, access and use the resources they need.  

City’s innovative learning spaces offer a mix of individual and group study areas to suit everybody’s learning needs. There are over 1,500 individual study spaces, many equipped with PC workstations, with approximately 200 spaces for group study. Group study rooms are equipped with audio-visual equipment to help students prepare presentations and share and discuss their ideas with colleagues.  

Assistive technology 
Library Services provide a range of support for students with additional needs. Facilities include software for students with visual impairments, inspiration mind-mapping and voice recognition software. This provision is available in specialist rooms at the Northampton Square Library. 

IT services 
Leading-edge technologies and 24-hour IT support ensure every student benefits from excellent IT facilities. Students receive a Microsoft Office 365 account, an email account for life, alongside access to a range of facilities such as Microsoft Teams, LinkedIn Learning, online storage and the full Microsoft Office suite for the duration of their studies.  

Computing labs 
Campus-wide wireless network provision enables students to connect to services from their own devices and City’s computer laboratories. With more than 140 different desktop applications, students have wide access to the software required for their studies. Some laboratories are open 24 hours a day and students can use City’s website to find available machines at any time of day.  

University of London facilities 
City’s membership of the University of London gives students access to a range of other libraries, including Senate House Library which offers additional online resources. As part of the University of London, students also get access to a wide network of library, social and sports facilities. 

Highlights for students include: 

  • Airbus cockpit simulator, micro turbines and formula car simulator in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics 
  • State-of-the-art 3D OCT camera used in City’s own opticians, City Sight, which is open to the public 
  • A fully equipped recording studio, composition studio, performance space and rehearsal rooms in the Department of Music 
  • A brand new building for The City Law School, featuring a dedicated law library and study spaces, a mock courtroom, and an in-house legal clinic.
     

SPORTS AND SOCIETIES AT CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

City Students’ Union (SU) works to improve the experience of City students. It provides independent advice on academic issues through the Union Support Service (USS). It also organises events and supports student clubs and societies, Raising and Giving (RAG) activity, student media and student-led environmental projects, so that students can play a full part in the City community and make the most of their time at City. 

Elected student officers represent students before the University and nationally: they ensure that students’ voices are heard on key student issues and lobby to make sure students have the support they need to excel. The Students’ Union supports City’s academic representation by training and supporting student course representatives. 

University sports are open to everyone. There are many sports and exercise opportunities for you to get involved in, regardless of your ability, commitment level or past experience. 

City’s sports centre, CitySport, is the largest student sports facility in central London. CitySport provides leading-edge sport and wellbeing facilities for students. Located approximately a five-minute walk from the Northampton Square campus, it is fitted with the latest and most sophisticated fitness equipment across 3,000m2 of floor space.   
 

ACCOMMODATION AT CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 

City offers a range of accommodation, including modern and newly refurbished halls of residence a short walk from the main City buildings, as well as private accommodation. 
Each with a team of management staff, the halls have private, modern study bedrooms and communal living spaces where students can cook, relax and feel at home. 

City guarantees halls of residence places to all first-year undergraduates who accept a place before the accommodation deadline. 

Postgraduate students will be able to apply for one of City’s affiliated halls once they have firmly accepted an offer at City. Please note that rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis, but priority is given to students with a disability or severe medical condition. 

Students have access to private housing advisors, legal housing advice, a contract checking service and housing events. 

Whether students want to live in halls or privately rented housing, the Student Centre's Accommodation team can help. 
 

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES AND INTERNSHIPS 

Many of City's undergraduate courses provide the opportunity to undertake a placement or internship as part of your studies. A work placement gives you the opportunity to gain real-work skills and road test your future career.  Professional placements take place in the third year of a four year sandwich degree. Your final degree certificate would then be endorsed with your placement. The type of opportunities available varies by school and course.
