RESEARCH MASTER'S

There are also two-year master's degrees that focus on research. These degrees are ideal if you are certain you want to continue with a doctorate degree. The research master’s degree will give you more hands-on experience conducting your own research and help you to further develop your research interests so that you are well prepared to write a proposal as part of your PhD application.

DOCTORATE

If you want further studies, and go deeper into your field, you may decide to pursue a doctorate degree. This is usually a three-year degree where you conduct research in a specific field you want to explore further. You will be required write a doctoral dissertation (thesis).

It is possible but very difficult to go straight into doctoral studies after a bachelor's degree in the UK, very good grades are required in addition to good contacts and experience. There is the greatest chance of being able to go on to a doctorate after taking your bachelor's degree at the same university, becoming familiar with the academic environment and gaining good contacts and work experience within the research environment at the university (by working as a "research assistant" for others researchers during your bachelor's degree). As it is very difficult to get directly into a doctoral degree after the bachelor's degree, most people choose to take a master's degree (or two!) or gain work experience before applying for a doctoral degree.

If you have taken a master's degree, and especially a research-based master's degree, this will of course have a positive effect on your application. You should have relevant work experience or other experience in this field, good academic recommendations and you should have a clear idea of what you want to research. This must be something that fits in with the university's research profile. We help you get in touch with the universities and find researchers who will be your supervisor through the doctoral degree, which will be crucial if you want to take a doctorate.
