CRIMINOLOGY STUDIES IN THE UK
By undertaking a degree in Criminology, you’ll review critical approaches to the criminal justice system and gain an international perspective on crime and its role in society. You’ll develop and debate key issues surrounding crime to evaluate how effective we, as a society, are in responding to crime.
Criminology is about challenging what society often sees as supposed "truths", especially when it comes to graffiti, violence, gang crime, psychiatry, police, punishment, courts, prisons, and everything connected with the social support system. For example:
"Is graffiti a crime, or is it really art?"
"Is drug or substance abuse a crime, or is it a disease?" (or maybe neither?)
“Is violence increasing? If yes, then why?”
Criminologists actively participate in the criminal policy debate in terms of knowledge and views, and they bring new perspectives to the forefront.
Criminology will provide you with strong professional prerequisites for specialization in the relationship between crime, control, and society. Why do some become criminals and others don't? How can you fight crime? Criminologists work with these types of questions, often within the social or correctional services. They help with planning or management in terms of media, the judiciary, teaching or research.
Several of our partners also offer work experience or exchanges to another country included in the programme. Here you can gain professional experience by working in a company or organization and learning what it means to work within the criminology field. These can lead to other exciting opportunities for work experience, internships and, job opportunities later in your career.
At the undergraduate level this degree can occasionally be combined with other subjects including psychology, philosophy, politics, law, and sociology. What you choose could be the springboard for your future career! To find out what combinations are available, contact one of our advisors.
