FOOD SCIENCE STUDIES IN THE UK
Are you interested in the nutritional content of the food you eat? Do you want to help solve current and future food challenges in society? Then Food Science is for you! This multidisciplinary subject is important at a time when the human population is growing, diseases linked to diet and lifestyle are on the rise, and food costs are on the rise.
How do some foods counteract cardiovascular disease, while others increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease? How can we best feed 7 billion people? How do we tackle morbid obesity and malnutrition? How do we ensure raw materials are transformed into nutritious, good quality finished products? These are the kinds of questions you will be dealing with a lot, both in theory and in practice.
MANY SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
There are a number of different ways to put together your own combination of subjects. Most subjects have in common a scientific and technical approach to the study of raw materials, the processing of products and the health effects of different foods and beverages. Food safety and quality improvement are two important areas of focus. You will be taught by leading experts in their fields and will be introduced to a network of professionals who have experience in top positions in the food industry and government agencies.
Food Science is a broad discipline, covering chemistry, biology, nutrition, biochemistry, microbiology and science, as well as the properties and composition of ingredients and how food is affected by storage processes and preservation. Through scientific and technological approaches, you will gain an understanding of the process food goes through from raw material to finished product.
Food science can be studied at bachelor's and master's level. On three-year bachelor's programmes, you have the opportunity to take a fourth extension year, where you can be seconded to the food industry or go on an exchange to another country.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The food industry is in constant need for people with scientific expertise and it is increasingly attractive to be able to demonstrate an international study background. This makes it possible to apply for positions in the food industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food or other bodies in the public sector that work with food related issues in food production and control, for example. You can play a key role in quality control, product development, research or positions related to technical services or environmental work. You can, of course, choose to study on to master's and doctoral degrees in associate or completely different fields of study. A master's degree will make you well suited for management positions, as well as for research and development in the food industry.
