What is the Chevening Scholarship?

For over 40 years, the Chevening Scholarship is an international scholarship programme funded by the UK Government. Available to applicants from more than 140 countries and territories, Chevening looks for emerging future leaders who are looking to further their development. Through the scholarship, successful applicants receive significant financial support and have the opportunity to complete an eligible one-year taught master's degree in the UK.

For Canadians, Chevening provides more than financial support: scholars join a global network of professionals, leaders and decision-makers and gain opportunities to develop their academic, professional and leadership skills.

How competitive is Chevening?

Chevening is very competitive, and about more than good grades. Tens of thousands of people apply worldwide each year, with only a small percentage of those applicants receiving a scholarship.

What does the scholarship cover?

Chevening Scholarships are designed so students can focus on their studies and professional development. As such, the award supports the cost of studying and living in the UK, with scholarship benefits normally including tuition, a monthly stipend to help with living expenses, and travel to/from the UK. Students are encouraged to check the current Chevening information for the exact financial support included in their award. Speak to your Across the Pond advisor to learn more about eligible programmes, deadlines and other key scholarship information.

Important information for Canadians:

Chevening is a highly competitive programme. A strong application should show clear examples of leadership and influence (through your professional, academic, or community experiences), the ability to build professional relationships, and a realistic plan for using your UK education to create lasting positive change.

You can work with your student advisor to research and apply to eligible one-year taught master’s programmes early so that you have sufficient time to prepare your Chevening application.
