Understanding that today’s students may want to learn a language in addition to their studies, the University of Leeds has recently launched two new schemes which expand the language learning opportunities available to students at the university.

Language Tasters

Launched in January 2016, students can enroll on a 10-week language taster course that offers instruction in Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian and Spanish. These courses are open to undergraduate and graduate students.  The level of interest in these beginner courses was even higher than expected and is evidence of the demand for language learning from students across the university.

Tandem at Leeds

Tandem at Leeds is a new pilot scheme, in which two students who are learning each other's language become partners and help each other progress on their language learning journey.  Launched in February, the aim is to match students who want to practice their language skills with native speakers. Students commit to meeting at least 10 times and are required to submit a reflective diary in order to achieve a certificate of successful completion.
