Leeds, University of

The University of Leeds is one of the largest and most successful universities in the UK.  As a member of the elite Russell Group (like the Ivy League in the US), it is well known for the quality of its research, learning and teaching.  With over 500 undergraduate and 300 graduate degrees, Leeds has one of the widest ranges of courses in the UK and welcomes over 31,000 students from more than 135 different countries.

Our academic strength extends across its nine faculties. The Business, Engineering, Law and Environment disciplines are particularly world renowned, but many of its Schools also have unique selling points.  The university is based on a single campus, 10 minutes’ walk from the city center with one of the liveliest Students’ Unions in the UK which is home to over 300 clubs and societies.

The UK’s third biggest city is located in the heart of the country, just two hours by train from London.  Leeds/Bradford Airport connects the city to many destinations throughout Europe and the larger Manchester Airport is just 90 minutes away by train. Leeds is the UK's largest center for financial and business services outside London, and is also recognized as the UK's most important legal center outside the capital, with over 180 law firms.  The city center is vibrant and lively and home to over 1,000 shops, including the first Harvey Nichols store to open outside of London. Over 35% of the UK's internet traffic is hosted in Leeds.  The 13,000 seater Leeds Arena is the UK’s newest ‘super theatre’ hosting the world’s top music and entertainment acts. The outstanding beauty of five national parks including the world famous Lake District is within easy reach.

In terms of student satisfaction, the university has held its position as 1st in the Russell Group and 13th in the UK (from 54 UK universities) for Learning ‘overall average’ satisfaction. It was also ranked 1st in the Russell Group for several individual measures in this category including ‘virtual learning facilities’ (also 2nd in the UK and 6th in the World), ‘learning spaces’, ‘course organization’ and ‘quality lectures’.

Facilities

The university’s £12.5m sports and fitness facility, The Edge, was opened in 2010, and was used by both the Chinese Olympic and Canadian Paralympic teams ahead of the London 2012 games.  The eyes of the sporting world were on Leeds once again in 2014 when the Grand Départ of the world’s most famous cycle race, the Tour de France, rolled into town.  Leeds is a sporting hub with professional soccer, rugby and cricket teams all based in the city, and there are opportunities for amateur participation across a huge range of pastimes.
