Studying in the UK: The essential facts for Canadian students

Writtle University College

Established in 1893, Writtle University College has a long history of providing exceptional education to students from the UK and around the globe. It is a small and specialist institution with a distinctive character, an international reputation for the quality of graduates and acclaimed academic experts. Its specialist subjects include: Agriculture, Contemporary Art and Design, Conservation, Cycling, Garden Design, Horticulture, Equine, Landscape Architecture, Professional Floristry, Sports and Exercise Performance and Veterinary Physiotherapy.

Writtle University College is a friendly campus with welcoming staff and students. All students can stay on campus in their first year and many often chose to stay for the full length of their course because they like the community feel. The class sizes are smaller than other universities, meaning the students get to know the lecturers and gain more hands-on experience.

The college is set in beautiful Essex countryside, in the east of England, 35 minutes from Central London and ten minutes from the city of Chelmsford. Chelmsford is a lively city with a wide variety of shops and restaurants, an indoor ice rink and swimming pool. Within the county of Essex they are historic attractions to be discovered such Audley End House and Gardens, Colchester Castle and Layer Marney Tower where Queen Elizabeth I stayed. Essex also boasts the home of the 2012 Olympic Mountain Biking track at Hadleigh Park and just into Hertfordshire is the 2012 Olympic Lee Valley White Water Centre.

Writtle University College has a Recreation Centre which has a multi-faith room, sports hall, gym and a squash court. There are also tennis courts, rugby, hockey and football pitches. There are a variety of social and sports societies students can join whilst at Writtle.

Writtle has a well-stocked library, with specialist journals and papers relating to its courses.

There is a Career Adviser who offers support and advice to all of the College’s students in finding employment whilst studying and for three years after they graduate. Writtle College has a dedicated team for international students, consisting of an International Marketing Officer, International Admissions and Compliance Officer, International Student Adviser, English Language Co-ordinator and a Careers Adviser.

Writtle University College has on-site accommodation for around 400 students, which creates a campus with a lively, community atmosphere. All the Home and International students mix together in Halls of Residences giving students a chance to meet people from different countries and experience difficult cultures. The rooms range from ensuite to shared bathrooms with communal kitchens (hob and microwave only) and eating areas. All have a safe in the rooms and all accommodation fees include a meal allowance for term time only. All rooms have free internet access, are non-smoking and halls are fitted with security locks on the entrance doors and all bedroom doors. The Halls have friendly wardens who can help students if they have any problems or queries.
